Raw Fleece and Beyond...

kari Roslund Fiber Artist
wool fibers for needle felt paintings
Growing up in Woolrich, Pennsylvania, I developed an affinity for woven woolen wares and the rich history of wool. This appreciation deepened when we decided to raise a small flock of our own. Through this experience, I discovered the incredible versatility of wool as an artistic medium. While most people are familiar with the traditional use of natural fibers—twisting, spinning, and weaving—many are unaware of the unique interlocking nature of wool fibers. As we managed our herd, I noticed that layering and vigorously rubbing wool caused the strands to interlace, revealing a new dimension to this material. Drawn by its usability and tactile nature, I found working with wool to be viscerally rewarding. My creative process has since evolved to include a broader exploration of communities and the emotional responses we have to their growth, transformation, and loss, and how these experiences shape our identities. In addition to wool, I now work with paper, wood, and metal to create art that rethinks traditional conventions and produces unconventional pieces. Through this expanded approach, I aim to delve into the intricate dynamics of community, highlighting how these collective experiences influence our sense of self. This allows me to merge my original influences with a broader understanding of the human experience, creating works that resonate on both personal and communal levels

Pairing conventional and unconventional materials...

As an artist, my work is deeply rooted in the tactile qualities of natural fibers. Growing up in Woolrich, Pennsylvania, I developed a profound appreciation for wool, which deepened when we raised a small flock of our own. I now work with raw fleeces, hand-dyed locks, and roving from various fibers like Alpaca, Angora, Llama, and silk, transforming them into vibrant, lustrous tones. This process creates contemporary tapestries with a three-dimensional element.

My creative process has evolved to explore the dynamics of community and the emotional responses to its growth, transformation, and loss. To reflect these themes, I’ve expanded my materials to include paper, wood, and metal. By integrating these with natural fibers, I challenge traditional conventions and produce unconventional art that resonates on personal and communal levels, merging my original inspirations with a broader understanding of the human experience.

Created with Fiber...

As an artist, I like to work with raw fleeces and hand dyed locks and roving. I love the sturdy, reliable durability of time-tested conventional natural fibers. I work with a variety of natural fibers, incorporating not only wool, but also Alpaca, Angora, Llama and silk.  I enjoy the process of taking these fibers from their raw state and reworking them into a palette of lustrous vibrant silks  and woolen vibrant tones. As I begin to construct a piece, the multiple textures, colors and forms are applied and interwoven. This process creates a type of contemporary tapestry, bringing a three dimensional element to my impressionistic work.
