Exploring Residency Possibilities at Juniata College Field Station

The Juniata College field station, nestled in a serene landscape with lakefront access, blends natural beauty with rich history. While the entire facility was impressive, a highlight was touring the original Grove family home, a charming building that stands as a testament to the property’s storied past.

My meeting with the Field station director, Eric Quallen, was both productive and inspiring. We discussed various possibilities for an artist residency at the field station, recognizing the value of integrating artistic creativity with the field station’s research and educational missions. After brainstorming a range of ideas, from long-term and short-term residencies, to seasonal themes and community engagement, I was tasked with composing several proposals that fit the parameters of a first year project. As our meeting concluded, Eric presented me with a bottle of maple syrup harvested from the property in 2023. This syrup has been produced on the land since the Grove family owned it, representing a cherished tradition.
