Creating inspiration with the Pennsylvania Quilt Block Pattern

Quilting tells stories through fabric. While I love working with fibers, I wanted to use the same material that most historical societies were working to preserve—paper. While quilts were often made from scraps of fabric that held memories, I hope to use notes, photos, maps, and other materials to patch together the story of each community. In working out some of the parameters for this project, I began with identifying my chosen block pattern- the Pennsylvania quilt block. Just as each state has an official bird or flower, each claims a quilt block pattern and this choice seemed a fitting choice for this project, rooting the piece in local heritage.

While I had already sent email invitations, I felt a physical example might help to share my vision and inspire when inviting groups in person. With three key events happening this week, This example quilt block was designed to inspire historical societies as they gathered materials for the project.  Although this block might not be included in the final project, it served as a meaningful start and sparked conversations and storytelling among attendees.

As far as the selected materials for this example they tell a little of my own story and how the idea of an archival quilt came to mind. Volunteering with the East Broad Top archive department, I was inspired by their rich history and the stories of people who worked and lived along their tracks. Discovering the little-known history of the Pioneer Trails bus service while helping with their archives inspired me to create an example highlighting this aspect of the East Broad Top.

This project is a journey of creativity and community. Creating this example allowed me to explore new techniques and work out some of the storytelling details that will make this project a success. I look forward to more opportunities to blend art and storytelling in my residency, celebrating the vibrant tapestry of life in t.
