Visiting the Isett Heritage Museum

This week, I had the pleasure of visiting the Isett Heritage Museum, a treasure trove of local history that provided me with a deeper understanding of the region’s industrial past. Founded by local business owner J. Melvin Isett and his wife, Beulah, whose passion for collecting and preserving local memorabilia led to the museum’s establishment, the museum’s extensive collection houses an eclectic spattering of various spaces and items from a time gone by.  While visiting Isett’s I learned more about the significant role industry played in shaping Huntingdon County, from its early manufacturing roots to its evolving economic landscape. I also learned about the founding of the local hospital, a testament to the community’s commitment to healthcare, and discovered that there were once over 200 one-room schoolhouses in the area, reflecting the early dedication to education.

The exhibits offered fascinating insights into local inventions, national publicity surrounding a local abduction, and the achievements of famous locals who have left their mark on history. The Museum Manager, Justina Hall, was incredibly welcoming and invited me to explore their resource room for any additional information I might want to include in my residency project. This wealth of historical data and artifacts will undoubtedly enrich the “Echoes in History” collage quilt, adding layers of context and storytelling. I am excited to weave these newfound historical threads into our collaborative artwork. Stay tuned for more updates as this journey unfolds!
