A visit with the Fort Shirley Heritage Association
During a recent visit to Shirleysburg, PA, I had the pleasure of spending the morning with the Fort Shirley Heritage Association, where I met Sally Love, one of the founding members. Sally welcomed me with hymns on their historic organ and guided me through their community-built log cabin, a space rich with the history of the area. As I explored, I encountered an array of artifacts, including pottery crafted by local artisans, ledgers and receipt books from former businesses, and furniture from the town’s old school. The fort, built in 1755 and used during the French and Indian War, offers a tangible connection to the deep history of the region. The highlight was visiting the old schoolhouse, still cherished by the community for events like their fall festival and apple butter fundraisers. I’m thrilled to include this unique community in the Grove Farm Residency Project, bringing their stories into the fabric of my work.
