Discovering Community Spirit in Petersburg

My journey to gather materials for my paper collage quilt recently took me to the Petersburg Community Development Association, where I was warmly welcomed by Guy Croyle, a dedicated member with a degree in rural sociology from Penn State. It was fascinating to learn that, like many local groups, they meet in the old school building that still stands at the heart of the community. Guy shared that while the association wasn’t founded solely to preserve history, it plays a vital role in building connections between current residents and celebrating the achievements of both past and present.

One of the most refreshing aspects of my visit was the association’s focus on the here and now—a different perspective on the changes in their area. Rather than dwelling solely on the past, they emphasize the importance of fostering a vibrant, connected community today. This approach is beautifully exemplified in their Annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a seasonal event that brings the community together in a truly unique way. Written for organ, brass, and timpani, this festival invites multigenerational community members to participate, filling roles and contributing to the celebration of the season. It’s clear that this organization is about more than just maintaining the past; it’s about celebrating the present and creating a strong foundation for the future. I’m excited to weave these stories and materials into my quilt, capturing the spirit of Petersburg for the Grove Farm Residency Project.
