Quilt Blocks Featuring the Isett Heritage Museum and the Swigart Museum
As I work on my Grove Farm Residency project, two quilt blocks have taken on special meaning, featuring the Isett Heritage Museum and the Swigart Museum. These local treasures, born from the passion of two remarkable local businessmen, capture different facets of our shared history. While they may differ in focus, both museums are testaments to the love these men had for preserving and sharing their collections with the public.
The Isett Heritage Museum, founded by Homer Isett, grew out of his desire to gather and display everything local. His passion was rooted in the everyday objects, photographs, and stories that tell the unique tale of our region. The museum stands today as a vast repository of Huntingdon County’s past, from tools and household items to personal memorabilia. Isett’s dedication ensured that future generations would have the opportunity to experience and learn from the rich history of our community.
In contrast, the Swigart Museum reflects the distinct collecting interest of William E. Swigart Jr., whose love for rare and unique cars and bicycles led to the creation of the oldest automobile museum in the United States. Swigart’s collection spans generations of automotive history, featuring everything from early bicycles to iconic cars that defined eras. His museum is a testament to his deep admiration for the art and innovation of transportation, sharing these timeless pieces with enthusiasts and the curious alike.
Both Isett and Swigart left behind a legacy that transcends their lifetimes. Through these quilt blocks, I hope to pay tribute to their passion, dedication, and the joy they found in preserving and sharing history. Their museums continue to be places where visitors can explore the past, and I’m honored to include them in this project, weaving their stories into the fabric of our community’s heritage.
Block - The Swigart Museum
As the oldest automobile museum in the U.S., The Swigart Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of automotive history, showcasing everything from vintage classics to one-of-a-kind prototypes. I’m thrilled to include the Swigart Museum and its cherished vehicles in my current project. Photos for this block include some of their collect as well as their weekly summer “Cars and Coffee” events, where car enthusiasts come together to share their classic and antique automobiles.
Block - The Isett Heritage Museum
The Isett Heritage Museum was also quick to respond to my invitation, offering access to their vast collection of artifacts and photographs that tell the story of Huntingdon County. Their quilt block shares the unique and eclectic nature of their collection, which spans a wide range of historical periods and themes. From everyday objects to rare and unusual items, the Isett Heritage Museum provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives and experiences of those who have called Huntingdon County home.
