Gathering Stories by the Water
As part of the Echoes of History project, I’ve been working on a paper bathing suit that celebrates the communities formed around the Juniata River, Raystown Lake, and the many swimming holes throughout the region. During visits to these spots—both quiet and well-loved—I incorporated images that highlight how deeply recreation connects us to place. In addition, over 70 photographs were generously donated by local organizations and individuals, offering glimpses into decades of lakeside leisure, family traditions, and summer gatherings. These moments—of boats, picnics, laughter, and still water—are the stories I’m carefully layering into the form of a retro bathing suit, one image at a time.
